Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine is not only a service we provide but the guiding principal in all that we do. It is not enough to determine what is wrong, you have to understand why it went wrong. If you don’t address the cause, you will always get an inferior result. Also, the doctor has to be aware of the patients other health conditions, for they can impact the chief complaint or problem the patient presents with. Functional Medicine as a service is a health care approach that is especially effective at addressing chronic conditions like thyroid disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, weight gain, autoimmune disease, arthritis, inflammatory disease, digestive issues such as ulcerative colitis, IBS, Crohn’s disease, reflux, gallbladder dysfunction, SIBO, H. Pylori infection, yeast and parasitic infections, hormonal imbalances, anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD and many others. It is even effective in conditions for which there is no known cure, because it increases the overall health of the person with the difficult or incurable disease. The healthier you are, the better you are able to handle what life throws at you.

FirstLine Therapy Lifestyle Coaching

“Persons with lower health risks tend to live longer than those with higher health risks. . .” “Not only do persons with better health habits survive longer, but in such persons, disability is postponed and compressed into fewer years at the end of life.” N Eng J Med 1998;338:1035-41 Health care should not be only concerned with extending life, but also producing quality in those extended years. FirstLine Therapy teaches patient’s what they are doing that is robbing them of their health and what they are not doing that is essential to their health. It coaches and directs them in addressing this in a doable, safe and fun way. Both Dr. Rees and Rebecca Young are certified FirstLine Therapy Lifestyle Coaches.

Functional Medicine Evaluation of Lab Work

Functional Medicine Evaluation of Lab Work goes beyond just determining what values are out of normal range. Within every normal range exist an optional range, that is enjoyed with optimally healthy people with no health issues at all. Many people shows signs and symptoms of disease and dysfunction with normal lab results. Click on the link below to watch a short video on normal vs optimal lab interpretation. In addition, Functional Medicine looks at patterns of test results to not only diagnose disease but evaluate normal physiology, the study of how the body is suppose to work.

Weight Loss Programs

FirstLine Therapy offers weight loss approaches designed to decrease body fat and spare muscle tissue. It is primarily a health approach, not just a healthy weight loss approach. It uses as its basis the Mediterranean Diet. This is not an approach offering boxed food that tastes like cardboard and has had all nutritional value processed out of it, so that it can last a 1000 years on a shelf. Once our patients overcome the addiction of too much sugar, fat, salt and fast food, they really appreciate the fresh fruit, vegetables and high quality meats that are the centerpiece of the Mediterranean Diet.

Detox Programs

Occasionally, you will hear from medical circles that there is no such thing as a detox program or that detox programs are worthless. The problem is in the terminology. The medical term for detox is biotransformation. This job is done primarily in the liver and to a lesser extent in every cell in the body. It is the process of turning harmful chemicals we ingest from the environment and even harmful chemicals are bodies make when we enter varying stages of dysfunction into a form that is less damaging and can be removed from the body. It is an incredibly important function, especially in these times where our environment is flooded with chemicals and poisons. We offer multiple detox programs tailored for the individual client. Remember, no two peoples health status is exactly the same. This is not one size fits all detox program.
